The Danube's southeasterly flow can be seen as a symbol of the European Union's expansion in this direction. Our region, with Ulm as the first large city on the Danube River, propagates the old traditions associated with the economic area of Southeast Europe.

Economic development in the region of Southeast Europe is making significant progress. The countries in this region with their growing international division of labour and labour cost advantages are potentially lucrative for German firms. Numerous direct investments from foreign companies, especially from Germany, are necessary for the sustainable economic upswing required to ensure industrial peace in the long term. The combination of low wages and well-trained professionals clearly makes the region interesting to small-scale investors.

With the on-going economic recovery and the increase in real income, the demand for investment and consumer goods will increase further. Excellent sales opportunities await German exporters in this region. Trade with the countries in middle and south-east Europe is already exhibiting high growth rates.

In establishing the Competence Centre for Southeast Europe, the CCI Ulm has focused its international activities on the countries of this particular region. A useful network of institutions and persons has thus been created, revitalising the traditional ties among the regions and cities along the Danube.
